I always try to play Smash Bros. online but I never get matched against anybody. So do I need the codes?Do you need friend codes to play online?
No, you don't need the codes to play smash bros. on-line. You don't need the codes to play any game on-line that i have ever played on any Nintendo system except Pokemon i think.Do you need friend codes to play online?

No you don't, friend codes are good for one thing and one thing only, playing against people you know by inviting them to play. The matchmaking takes forever if not ever finding a match, usually you just need to re-enter matchmaking for the game, the match system either isn't very good, or no on plays Smash bros anymore.

The Wii one will also only allow you to play with people you have exchanged friend codes with.
